Scentwork is a new dog sport where your dog can learn how to use their nose just like a professional detection K9. However, your dog will search for cotton swabs scented with birch oil. Your team will start with easy searches: small rooms and boxes. As you search exteriors of buildings and vehicles, it gets more difficult. Scentwork is a great opportunity for your dog to develop confidence in their surroundings and independent problems solving skills. Working together as a team to solve complex problems will strengthen your bond with your dog.
Scentwork is truly a sport for any dog and handler and all ages and breeds are welcome to attend. It is easy to practice Scentwork at home as you do not need much equipment or space. In the class, each search will be run one dog at a time, so this is a great opportunity for anxious and fearful dogs to participate in a sport. We will make every effort to accommodate all dogs and handlers. However, please note that any dog behaving aggressively towards humans or canines, may be asked to leave.
To keep up with the pace of the class, you will need to practice a few times each week with your dog. I send out lectures and videos and am always available via email to answer questions.
Intro to Odor:
In this class, the goal is to teach your dog to search for odor! You will learn how to prepare odor, place hides, handle your dog, and mark alerts. We will make searching for scent extremely fun, positive, and rewarding. By the end of the class, most dogs will be ready to pass their Odor Recognition Test and will consistently be able to find odor and stay at source.
About the Instructor:
Noah Gaines loves teaching Scentwork at Goleta Valley Dog Club. He is lucky to have shared the last five years with a spunky Brittany (Iona) who has thrived in the sport of Scentwork. Together, they have competed in multiple trials and training events, consistently receiving high marks. Noah is looking forward to bringing this sport to more teams in the Santa Barbara/Goleta area.
