Jump Skills 1 with Anne
December 12, 2010 @ 11:45 am - 12:45 pm$90 – $120
Jumps comprise the majority of the obstacles in our agility classes and trials, yet seem to be one of the things we spend the least time training. If a dog makes it over a jump it is deemed a success, but we also need to take a look at striding, balance, leads, and form. This class is not just for dogs that knock bars (even though these exercises will help address that), it will benefit dogs in various levels of training and trialing, and is a great class for dogs preparing to trial. We will do a variety of jump grids designed to help your dog develop scope (ability to see judge take-off and obstacle clearance), balance, correct take-off place, and distance between jumps. Dogs need these skills in order to negotiate a course or sequence in agility classes, practices, seminars, and trials. Proper jumping will build muscle strength, coordination, and flexibility, and will help your dog prepare for the challenges he will see in future agility classes and/or trials.
We will also be utilizing a variety of jumps as the session progresses: broad jump, panel jump, double and triple jumps. This is a good class to work on start lines and lead outs (both stationary and in motion).
This Jump Skills class would be a great next step if you have taken Scott’s Intro II and/or III classes and are looking to progress with your agility foundation training, and your dog’s understanding of the obstacle they are going to see the most on an agility course.
An Intro to Agility class is a recommended prerequisite, and a dog that will send to a food target or toy. Please bring a crate or an ex-pen, water and treats, shade for you and your dog, a chair for yourself, and if you can pair up with a classmate it is recommended to bring a video camera to be able to later review your dog’s performance over the jumps and grids in class.
